Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell lived in the Shadow Realm with their two young children, Desiree and Amelia. The parents were known throughout the region for their unmatched control over ice and flame, they could conjure and wield both with both power and accuracy. Their magical abilities soon caught the eye of the Shadow Walker himself, who wanted them to join his army- with their abilities on his side, he knew he would be virtually unstoppable. However, the Caldwells could not be tempted or threatened into joining him and flatly refused. They would spend much of their time on the run from the Shadow Walker and the powerful shadow demons he would send to find them. He did not take thier refusal lightly.
The Caldwells couldn't hide for long, and soon the Shadow Walker sent his most fearsome demons, lead by a dire shadow raptor with piercing red eyes. They stormed the Caldwell's home, and the parents had just enough time to hide their daughters, then only six years old before facing the demons head on.
As strong as they were, the Caldwells destroyed all of the minor demons, leaving their blackened remains spread across the floor. The dire raptor remained as their final adversary. Its power was far greater than the other demons and with each attack, it drew more and more of their life forces into itself, siphoning their energy.
But the Caldwells were not so easily slain, and in a moment of combined power, they blasted the shadow raptor in a wave of all-consuming fire. It let out a roar of anguish, and its dark form fell, disintegrating into the very ash it had been forged from. The demon perished, but it had sucked their life force into itself, and thus consumed their goodness and love for their daughters. One final spark landed on its ashen heap and it ignited. The life force inside it was still fresh and hadn't yet journeyed from the plane of the living, and the magical ash took form again, this time as a blazing phoenix rising from the ashes- the first ever phoenix to grace the realm of the Vortex. The parents' love had caused an unexpected shift- from ash to flame, a fiery, guardian angel of their twin girls was born. The couple breathed their last breath and moved on to the celestial plane.
The phoenix was newly born and very disoriented. She flew from the house through a shattered window, and perched on the roof, shivering while she tried to make sense of what had just happened. She was a creature of good, but she had terrible memories of the events that just happened. Born from the ashes of the demon, she held its full memory. She knew what she had done in her past life, and it tormented her soul.
She held other memories too. They were fuzzy and distant, but just as powerful. They were of love, of hope, and of protection. Though the phoenix had never met the two young Caldwell girls, she loved them as her own. The life forces of the parents the demon had fused partially into the phoenix's being. Their love had become part of her.
The phoenix continued to watch the Caldwell twins from afar for many years, helping them in subtle ways but never allowing them to see her. She felt shame for their parent's death and couldn't face them directly. Her actions as a demon had forever changed their lives, she didn't deserve to know them.
When they moved to the Metro, so did the phoenix, and at this point, the fire bird had a dream where Rao, god of light and reason, came to her and gave her the ability to shift into a human form so she could better protect the twins in this new environment. When she awoke, she found her dream had come true.
As a woman, she gained the ability so speak, and Rao blessed her with some basic knowledge to help her navigate the human world (though she still had much to learn, and many people would find her mannerisms to be rather strange at times.) She posed as a social worker to the girls, offering them help by paying for their electricity, buying them phones, and finding any possible way to make their lives easier. Her position to them still remains distant, however, and she hasn't met them face to face...
